3 Olympic Athletes And 1 Olympic Committee Member Test Positive For COVID-19

Already starting to see signs of Covid-19 with the Tokyo Games. On Sunday, organizers of the Tokyo Games confirmed that two athletes tested positive fo COVID-19. Organizer however did not identify the athletes who tested positive.

The South African Football Association confirmed that two players and a video analyst had tested positive. SAFA confirmed that the two players are defender Thabiso Monyane and midfielder Kamohelo Mahlatsi. They have not confirmed who the video analyst is.

South Africa is suppose to play Japan on Thursday in their first game at Tokyo Stadium.

In a statement, team manager Mxolisi Sibam said that the South African soccer squad has been quarantined and further testing of players has been conducted.

Organizers also confirmed that another athlete who is not in the Olympic Village, has tested positive and they have identified that athlete as table tennis player Ryu Seung-min of South Korea. In 2004 Ryu won an Olympic gold medal.

Organizers confirmed an additional case and that Individual has been identified as Tegla Loroupe, the chief mission of the IOC’s Refugee Olympic Team. Loroupe was still in Doha, Qatar when she tested positive so the team has delayed it arrival in Tokyo.

The Games in Tokyo, they are expected to begin this week and organizers say that 55 people have tested positive since July 1. The number of reported new cases of COVID-19 in Tokyo, as of Sunday was 1,008. Sunday was the fifth straight day with more than 1,000 cases reported.
