This summers Olympics in Tokyo is history in the writing for the transgender community.
On Monday it was confirmed that Laurel Hubbard will be among five weightlifters for New Zealand’s team. Hubbard will also be the first transgender athlete to compete at the Olympics.
Hubbard who transitioned eight years ago at the age of 35, will also be the oldest weightlifter at the Games and will be ranked fourth in the women’s heavyweight division.
She has met all of the requirements of the International Olympic Committee’s regulations for trans athletes and fair competition.
