By Kenton Mayfield –
This week we’ve heard a lot about moves, picks and transactions within the NFL but one move that we haven’t heard much about, is the NFL’s pick for Senior Vice President and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer.
I’m not gonna throw a flag on this play because I think the NFL scored a touchdown by picking Jonathan Beane, who happens to be a national board member with the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).
Beane who will become the NFL’s new Senior Vice President and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer on September 8, brings a wealth of breath and knowledge to the job. He has held senior diversity roles at Roche, 21st Century Fox and Time Warner.
The NFL could have went out and taken anybody in for this position but they needed the right person and that, well it happens to be Beane who has 20 years of experience doing what the NFL wants and needs right now.
In a statement the NFL said, “Jonathan will spearhead the league’s overarching diversity, equity and inclusion strategy, and will collaborate with senior leadership to drive actionable change throughout the league.”
Commissioner Roger Goodell said “Jonathan joins the NFL at an important time, and we look forward to his broad expertise and leadership on diversity, equity, and inclusion policies and practices for the betterment of our league.”
The position of Senior Vice President and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer with the NFL is a new position and the NFL says that “the Senior Vice President and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer role was established to help cultivate a more inclusive culture where diversity is celebrated and valued.”
Speaking about his new job, Beane said “The opportunity to serve as the league’s Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer and work closely with league and club executives, ownership and other important stakeholders on diversity, equity and inclusion efforts is an exciting one. This work is where my passion lies.”
Beane holds a Master of Studies in Law in Taxation from Georgetown University, as well as a Juris Doctor and master’s degree in business administration from the University at Buffalo – SUNY. He earned his bachelor’s degree in American History from Dartmouth College.
In Addition to being on the National Board of Directors of GLAAD, Beane also serves on the the Dean’s Advisory Council for the University at Buffalo School of Law.
